New Rail’s load-decoupled single-axle bogie combines two cylindrical running wheels, four safety wheels and the bogie frame in one assembly.
New Rail uses flangeless cylindrical wheels with a 0° tread slope and a constant diameter across the running surface. The left and right wheels rotate independently, each with its own axle. This constant diameter provides the physical basis for relating wheel revolutions to the running distance of each wheel.
New Rail’s load-decoupled single-axle bogie combines two cylindrical running wheels, four safety wheels and the bogie frame in one assembly.
The cylindrical running wheel has a flangeless tread with a 0° slope. Its diameter remains constant across the running surface, even when the contact position shifts laterally.
The design embodiment shown has a tread width of 150 mm. Each wheel has its own axle and rotates independently of the wheel on the opposite side.

Conical Wheel — Variable Effective Diameter
A change in the wheel–rail contact position changes the effective rolling diameter. The running distance per revolution therefore varies with the contact position.
Cylindrical Wheel — Constant Diameter
A lateral change in the contact position does not change the nominal rolling diameter of the cylindrical tread.
This establishes a consistent geometric relationship between wheel revolutions and running distance.
S = π × D × N
S — Rolling distance
D — Cylindrical wheel diameter
N — Number of wheel revolutions
Under ideal rolling conditions, the running distance is directly proportional to the number of wheel revolutions when D remains constant.
Independent rotation allows the running distances of the left and right wheels to be controlled separately, providing the mechanical basis for active steering.
The cylindrical wheel provides the running function, while separate safety wheels provide emergency derailment restraint.
The wheel-unit structure and safety-wheel arrangement are explained in the following technical pages.
Key Principle: Constant-diameter cylindrical wheels establish a stable geometric basis for independent left and right running-distance control.
The equation describes the geometric rolling relationship; it does not imply that actual slip, elastic deformation or wear are zero.

New Rail
New Rail

S = π × D × N
