The technologies presented at InnoTrans 2026 illustrate a shared direction in European bogie development: independent wheel rotation combined with active control to improve curve running, reduce wear and enhance ride quality.
France’s Texelis SILK, the United Kingdom’s SET ActiGlide and Germany’s DLR NGT-FuN approach this challenge through different combinations of mechanical integration, wheel-level control and electronic guidance.
An integrated running system for lightweight regional trains
SILK combines independent wheels, electric motors, reduction gearing, braking and suspension in a lightweight running system for the TELLi regional-train programme.
Its focus includes real-time position adjustment, reduced wear and easier maintenance. Rather than treating propulsion, suspension and servicing as separate tasks, SILK brings them together in one running-system platform.
Texelis contributes its experience in railway axles and running systems within the SNCF-led TELLi development consortium.
Individual wheel control linked to position sensing
ActiGlide connects individual wheel drive, rail-head position sensing and suspension. In-wheel motors and wheel-level torque control are used to reduce creep and flange contact and improve running quality.
Its development builds on earlier Wheelmotor and ActiWheel research. The development background combines SET’s electrical and control expertise with university work in control and simulation, alongside system integration and test-vehicle development.
The technical focus is active control at the wheel–rail interface.
Independent wheels, direct drive and electronic track guidance
NGT-FuN develops an independently rotating single-axle bogie for high-speed double-deck vehicles with a continuous passenger passageway.
The system combines gearless permanent-magnet synchronous motor drives with control of lateral position, radial alignment and wheel-wear profiles.
DLR connects simulation, full-scale functional prototypes and external test rigs in its research programme. High-speed validation is a development objective, rather than a completed operating result.
22–25 September 2026 | Berlin, Germany
InnoTrans is a leading international trade fair for transport technology, held every two years in Berlin. Organized by Messe Berlin, it brings together railway vehicles, infrastructure, public transport and related technologies. Its exhibition halls and outdoor railway displays provide a meeting place for manufacturers, operators and research institutions. InnoTrans
European Active Bogie Technologies on Display
The technologies introduced on this page—Texelis SILK from France, SET ActiGlide from the United Kingdom and DLR NGT-FuN from Germany—were presented at InnoTrans 2026. They illustrate different approaches to independent wheel rotation, individual wheel drive and active guidance.
Their development brings together specialist manufacturers, universities and research institutions, supported by long-term research and testing. These exhibits show that independent wheels and active control are an important direction in European bogie development.
