Texelis SILK, SET ActiGlide and DLR NGT-FuN combine independent wheel rotation with active control.
New Rail shares this direction but changes the underlying mechanical structure. Its distinction is not independent rotation alone, but constant-diameter running wheels, separate safety wheels and a load-decoupled steerable bogie.
The European configurations compared here retain flanged conical wheels. When the wheel–rail contact position shifts laterally, the effective rolling diameter changes. Even with accurate rotation control, the distance travelled per revolution can therefore vary.
New Rail uses flangeless cylindrical wheels with a 0° tread slope. A lateral change in contact position does not change the cylindrical tread diameter, providing a stable geometric relationship between wheel revolutions and running distance.
Independent rotation does not remove diameter variation. Cylindrical wheel geometry removes this source of variation.
A conventional flanged wheel combines the running tread and the restraining flange in one component.
New Rail assigns these functions to separate wheels. Cylindrical running wheels support vertical loads and provide actively controlled movement. Four safety wheels normally remain clear of the rails and provide mechanical restraint against the inner rail faces in emergencies.
Normal running is controlled actively; emergency restraint is provided by separate safety wheels.
Variable rolling diameter introduces running-distance variation and associated lateral and yaw disturbances that the control system must address.
New Rail changes this starting point by removing the conicity-driven source of hunting. Vertical loads pass through the suspension, while horizontal forces and moments follow separate support and vertical-connection paths.
The controlled difference between left and right running distances rotates the complete single-axle bogie around its central pivot.
Wheel geometry, load transmission and whole-bogie steering are designed together—not treated as separate control problems.
Constant-diameter wheels provide the geometric basis for converting virtual-rail paths into wheel-speed targets.
Wheel-rotation control makes the wheel-pair center follow the center virtual rail. Measured lateral error can then be used as the difference between the actual track center and the digital running reference.
The AI unit uses this information to correct, store and reuse the virtual rail.
New Rail connects its mechanical redesign to a digital reference that improves through operating experience.

New Rail
New Rail
New Rail
New Rail
New Rail
