Conventional flanged conical wheelset
Conventional railway wheels combine running, guidance and derailment protection in a flanged conical wheelset.
As the wheel shifts laterally on the rail, its effective rolling radius changes. This helps provide self-centering, but it also creates repeated differences in left and right travel distance and becomes a source of hunting motion.
Independent wheel rotation can remove the rotational constraint of a common axle, but it does not remove the changing rolling radius of the conical tread itself.
New Rail starts by changing this physical foundation rather than only compensating for its effects.
Four Structural Problems
Problems rooted in the conventional wheel–rail relationship affect control, steering, switching and maintenance.
Contact-position changes alter the effective wheel diameter, making wheel rotation an unstable geometric basis for exact travel-distance control.
Repeated self-centering and lateral motion generate dynamic loads that interfere with smooth, precise steering.
The same flanged wheel performs running, guidance and derailment protection, coupling normal operation with emergency safety functions.
Conventional trains rely on movable trackside switches to open the required route, limiting how independently a vehicle can choose its path.
Change the Physical Cause, Not Only the Compensation
New Rail replaces the varying-radius conical running surface with constant-diameter cylindrical wheels, separates emergency safety into dedicated safety wheels, and separates the load paths needed for vertical support and active steering.
This creates a mechanical foundation for precise travel-distance control, whole-bogie steering, fixed-turnout route selection and AI virtual-rail control.

New Rail
New Rail
