New Rail separates the running and emergency safety functions of conventional flanged conical wheels, then reunites them in a single wheel unit.
Each wheel unit consists of one flangeless cylindrical running wheel and two separate safety wheels positioned ahead of and behind it.
Conventional Flanged Conical Wheelset
Conventional conical wheels combine running, guidance and derailment restraint. Their effective rolling diameters vary with the wheel–rail contact position, causing repeated self-centering and hunting.
Separation of Running and Safety
Cylindrical Running Wheel: A 0° tread slope and constant diameter provide the running function and support vertical loads.
Separate Safety Wheels: Safety wheels provide mechanical restraint against the inner rail faces in emergencies.
This separation removes the conicity-driven source of hunting while preserving mechanical derailment restraint.
Reassembled New Rail Wheel Unit
One cylindrical running wheel and two safety wheels are integrated through the wheel frame, support, suspension and connecting structures.
Running and emergency safety are separated in function but integrated into one mechanical assembly.
Each wheel unit is independently driven. In the illustrated embodiment, one driving motor is assigned to each wheel unit.
The left and right running wheels have independent axles and can be controlled at different rotational speeds.
Drive Transmission
Driving Motor → Motor Connection → Rotational Gearbox → Cylindrical Wheel Axle → Cylindrical Running Wheel
In this design embodiment:
The rotating part of the gearbox is fixed to the cylindrical wheel axle.
The gearbox housing is fixed to the wheel frame.
The gearbox is part of the unsprung mass, while the driving motor is supported on the sprung side.
The motor and gearbox arrangement is an example. Other independent-drive configurations, including in-wheel motors, are possible.
One cylindrical running wheel + two safety wheels = one independently driven wheel unit.
By separating running and emergency restraint, New Rail provides the mechanical foundation for constant-diameter running-distance control and active steering.
The safety-wheel mechanism is explained in 03-03, and the assembly of independent wheel units with the bogie frame is explained in 03-05.

New Rail
New Rail
