New Rail integrates two independently driven cylindrical-wheel units with a single-axle bogie frame.
The wheel units are connected to the bogie frame through suspension units and vertical-connection units. These two mechanical systems transmit vertical loads and horizontal forces and moments through separate paths while allowing the necessary relative movements.
The single-axle bogie consists of two independently driven wheel units, one on each side.
Each wheel unit has its own cylindrical running wheel, axle and driving motor.
Left wheel unit: Left motor → Left gearbox → Left running wheel
Right wheel unit: Right motor → Right gearbox → Right running wheel
A single axle refers to the common axle position of the two running wheels, not to a rigid common rotating axle.
The bogie frame is lowered onto the two wheel units, forming two distinct mechanical connections.
① Vertical Connection
Bogie insert rods enter the corresponding openings in the bogie frame. These connections transmit horizontal forces and moments.
② Suspension Connection
Suspension units connect to the suspension-unit supports on the bogie frame and transmit vertical loads.
In the illustrated embodiment, two insert rods are provided for each wheel unit, one at the front and one at the rear, giving a total of four insert rods.
The longitudinal separation of these connections enables the transmission of horizontal forces and local yaw moments.
Vehicle vertical loads are transmitted through the following structural path:
Vehicle Body → Central Pivot Unit → Insert-Opening Support Beams → Suspension-Unit Supports → Suspension Units → Wheel Frames → Cylindrical Wheel Axles → Cylindrical Running Wheels → Rails
The suspension units carry vertical loads while accommodating vertical shock and vibration.
Each wheel unit uses a pair of wheel frames with bearings supporting the cylindrical wheel axle. In the illustrated embodiment, two suspension units are provided for each wheel unit.
The suspension combines elastic elements for vertical support with dampers for vibration-energy dissipation.
The safety wheels and bogie insert rods are not part of the vehicle's vertical-load transmission path.
Horizontal forces and moments are transmitted through a separate structural path:
Cylindrical Running Wheel → Wheel Axle → Wheel Frame → Horizontal Support Unit → Bogie Insert Rods and Openings → Bogie Frame → Central Pivot Unit → Vehicle Body
The central pivot unit transmits five load components:
One vertical force
Two horizontal forces
Two moments: roll and pitch
Yaw rotation is permitted, and yaw moment is not transmitted through the upper central pivot.
The lower vertical-connection units transmit horizontal forces and moments, including local yaw moments.
In the illustrated load arrangement, the opposing local yaw moments balance each other, while the upper central pivot permits the complete bogie to rotate horizontally.
This arrangement distinguishes local moment transmission within the bogie from the permitted rotation of the complete bogie relative to the vehicle body.
The vertical-connection unit permits relative vertical movement between each wheel unit and the bogie frame while restraining the other five relative movements.
Permitted Movement — One Direction
Vertical translation
Restrained Movements — Five Directions
Longitudinal translation
Lateral translation
Roll rotation
Pitch rotation
Yaw rotation
The illustrated connection uses eight guide rollers arranged on four faces at upper and lower positions.
This guidance structure allows each wheel unit to accommodate vertical height differences while maintaining the horizontal force and moment transmission path.
The suspension units simultaneously carry vertical loads and accommodate vertical movement, helping the running wheels maintain rail contact through changing track elevations and cant transitions.
Two independently driven wheel units + Separate vertical and horizontal load paths + Vertical relative movement + Whole-bogie horizontal rotation
These mechanical functions are integrated into one flexible, load-decoupled single-axle cylindrical-wheel bogie.
The structure provides the mechanical basis for active steering of the complete bogie while accommodating vertical wheel-unit movements.

New Rail
