New Rail controls the running distances of the left and right cylindrical wheels independently to steer the complete single-axle bogie.
This active steering also enables the vehicle to enter its selected route through a fixed-rail turnout, without relying on movable rails to open the path.
Each cylindrical running wheel is independently driven by its own motor. The difference between the left and right running distances rotates the complete bogie around its central pivot.
On straight track, the wheels have equal target running distances. On curves, they generate the different distances required by the inner and outer paths.
For a left turn, for example, the right wheel is commanded to make more revolutions than the left wheel, turning the bogie toward the left.
The wheel units and bogie frame rotate together as one assembly, rather than steering individual wheels separately.
Conventional Movable Turnout
A conventional turnout moves its switch rails to establish one route. The vehicle follows the path opened by the turnout.
New Rail Fixed-Rail Turnout
The long and short rails, branching section and crossing section remain fixed. Both routes are physically available without switching movable rails.
The vehicle identifies its current position and the turnout direction, selects its target route and generates the required left–right running-distance difference to steer into that route.
Entry into the selected route is achieved by the vehicle’s active steering, rather than by changing the position of the rails.
The fixed turnout includes gaps through which the safety wheels pass at the branching and crossing sections.
The cylindrical running wheels have sufficient tread width to maintain support on adjacent rail-top surfaces while passing these gaps.
This combines the clearance needed for the safety wheels with continuous support for the running wheels.
The design objective is smooth passage without the wheel–rail impact and noise caused by a loss of support at the gaps.
Vehicle-controlled route selection provides the basis for more flexible express and local train movements.
In the illustrated operating concept, stopping vehicles branch toward a station while through vehicles continue along the main line.
The objective is to reduce waiting for turnout switching and enable real-time separation and overtaking of express and local services.
Independent wheel-distance control → Whole-bogie steering → Vehicle-selected routes → More flexible railway operation.

New Rail
New Rail
