New Rail combines two active single-axle bogies and one central fixed bogie beneath a common three-axle bogie frame.
The front and rear bogies determine the running direction, while the central bogie shares the load and follows the curved path established by them.
Front and Rear Active Bogies
Each active single-axle bogie rotates horizontally and uses independent left and right wheel drive to control its running direction. The front and rear modules can therefore steer individually to follow the rails.
Central Fixed Bogie
The central bogie uses wider cylindrical wheel treads to support the load while accommodating changes in wheel–rail contact position. It follows the front and rear modules without separate steering rotation.
For locomotive applications, differential drive for the central bogie is under consideration to enable it to share the tractive effort.
Common Three-Axle Bogie Frame
The common frame connects all three modules and can rotate relative to the vehicle body. It also permits the individual steering rotation of the front and rear active bogies.
This arrangement separates the steering role of the outer modules from the supporting role of the central module.
On a curve, the rails shift laterally relative to the central wheels. Instead of turning the central bogie, New Rail accommodates this offset by allowing the contact position to move across its wider cylindrical treads.
The central bogie has no safety wheels in the illustrated configuration. It follows the guidance provided by the front and rear modules while allowing the relative lateral displacement required on curves.
The central tread width is determined by the curve-related offset, track and vehicle tolerances, and allowances for wear and safety.
The central bogie strengthens load support without requiring its own steering rotation.
The three-axle configuration extends New Rail’s mechanical structure toward locomotives and heavy-haul railway vehicles.
The front and rear active bogies provide steering, while the central bogie adds load support and offers a potential contribution to traction through the differential-drive arrangement under consideration.

New Rail
