New Rail uses a virtual rail as the digital reference for its independently driven cylindrical running wheels. The AI unit calculates each wheel’s target rotational speed from this reference, connecting the intended running path with actual wheel movement.
The AI unit controls the left and right wheels according to their respective virtual-rail paths. Because cylindrical wheels have constant diameters, their rotation produces the running distances required by those paths.
As a result of this control, the wheel-pair center—the reference center between the left and right wheels—coincides with the center virtual rail.
The measured difference between the actual track center and the wheel-pair center therefore also represents the difference between the actual track and its virtual reference.
Lateral error Δy = Actual track center − Wheel-pair center
= Actual track center − Center virtual rail
This turns a physical wheel-position error into information for correcting the digital running reference. The AI unit uses its direction and magnitude to bring the virtual rail closer to the actual track.
The virtual rail describes both the position along the route and the lateral path to follow at each position. Three related reference paths work together.
Center Virtual Rail
Defines the path followed by the wheel-pair center.
Left and Right Virtual Rails
Define each wheel’s running path and provide the basis for calculating its target rotational speed.
These references are not a fixed copy of the original track design. Measured lateral error and operating data allow them to be corrected as actual track conditions change.
On curves, the outer wheel must travel farther than the inner wheel. For equal-diameter cylindrical wheels, the AI unit sets the target rotational-speed ratio to match the inner and outer path-length ratio.
The outer wheel therefore rotates faster to cover the longer path. On straight track, the targets provide equal left and right running distances.
Virtual-rail paths → Target wheel-speed ratio → Left–right running distances → Wheel-center alignment
Measured lateral error then provides feedback for correcting the virtual rail and updating the targets. The correction process and reuse of the updated reference are explained in 04-03 Correction & Reuse.

New Rail
